Tonny’s Livelihood project (Tonny’s Story)

Tonny’s life represents determination even in times of hardship. Amidst of COVID-19 pandemic which resulted a lockdown and increased poverty that left many persons with disability families depends on one meal a day in rural areas like Matuga, Right now is not a case to Mugabe Tonny.
Mugabi Tonny is 34 years old living with cerebral palsy and married with two girls in Nkoma- Nsanga in Matuga. He depends on agriculture as only source of income for the family.

Tonny has lived with cerebral palsy since childhood 1987. In this threat times of COVID-19 Light for World trained some of UNAC staff to become trainer of trainees (TOT) on livelihood skills so that they are able to identified and train Entrepreneurs with disabilities on livelihood skills. Persons with disabilities were identified and trained on livelihood income activities like liquid soap making and backyard farming were tony was among the participants. An individual assessment was done to meet the livelihood activity needs of the participants. A UNAC staff (Kirungi Christine) wrote a livelihood proposal and this was submitted to Light for the world and managed to get funds through Bridge funding.

And Tonny was able to be supported with Ugx: 600,000/=(Six hundred thousand shillings) like others. Tonny is among successful participants because the money he got enabled him plant a garden of 1500 seedling of Cabbages on 100ft x 100ft plot of land at Nkoma village.
“I expect to make harvest this end month of December 2020 and sell them off to marker vendor from Matuga on the garden price which is ranges from 600/= to 700/= Ugandan shilling per Cabbage, and sell some to community members at a price of 1000/= per cabbage. And after sales I expect to get over 1,000,000/= (One million shilling) minus expenses, I expect to make a profit of 700,000/= (Seven hundred shillings) assuming no risk is incurred. This income will enable improve my household income needs and sustain my family even in this time of COVID-19 periods.” Says Tonny.
