UGANDA NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CEREBRAL PALSY

is a non-governmental organization established in 2013 to advocate for the rights of people with Cerebral Palsy (CP).

In 2011, a Cerebral Palsy project started under the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) after realizing that people with CP were marginalized and not included in the disability movement.

NUDIPU through her partners Disabled People’s Denmark (DPOD) and SPASTIKA Organization (Denmark) entered an agreement to support activities of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda. Thus, a project was developed aimed at inclusion and empowerment of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda. Throughout the implementation of the project, it became necessary to start the process of forming an association of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION

People with Cerebral Palsy are among the most marginalized persons with disabilities in Uganda. The current National strategies, plans, statistics and reports do not recognize people with Cerebral Palsy as a major category of disability. They are considered among “other categories of disabilities”.

This has affected their access to services especially health care.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2011, NUDIPU entered in partnership with Spasitika Association Denmark and secured funding to implement activities targeting people with Cerebral Palsy in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Buikwe districts.

This was the first funding that resulted into the formation of Uganda National Association of Cerebral palsy (UNAC).
