BACKGROUND

The Uganda National Association of Cerebral Palsy (UNAC) is a non-governmental organization established in 2013 to advocate for the rights of people with Cerebral Palsy (CP).

In 2011, a Cerebral Palsy project started under the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) after realizing that people with CP were marginalized and not included in the disability movement.

NUDIPU through her partners Disabled People’s Denmark (DPOD) and SPASTIKA Organization (Denmark) entered an agreement to support activities of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda. Thus, a project was developed aimed at inclusion and empowerment of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda. Throughout the implementation of the project, it became necessary to start the process of forming an association of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda.

An interim Executive Committee was put in place with the responsibility of establishing and registering an association of people with Cerebral palsy among others. In 2013, Uganda National Association of Cerebral Palsy (UNAC) was formed and registered with the NGO board a government organ that is charged with registration and monitoring the operations of NGOs in Uganda. The Registration Number for UNAC is 10150.

The Cerebral Palsy project had a membership of 142 (87 are male and 55 are female) which increased to 538 (342 are males and 196 are females) members with Cerebral palsy mobilized in only 4 districts out of the total 112 districts after becoming an organization of people with Cerebral Palsy in Uganda. However, UNAC is still mobilizing resources to sensitize the communities about Cerebral Palsy in the remaining 108 districts.

Currently UNAC is in partnership with Danish Spasitika Association, Disability Rights Funds (DRF) and Abilis Foundation (Finland) and other local Disability Organizations like National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) and Community Based Rehabilitation Alliance (COMBRA)
